I got a fancy new Montana-shaped cutting board from my man for Xmas. I love it, but the wood seemed a bit dry and vulnerable to the kitchen elements. So I did a little research and found a recipe for spoon oil.
Spoon oil (or spoon butter) is a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil used to treat and protect wooden kitchenware. It’s totally natural and non-toxic. (I’m pretty sure I drank mineral oil to induce labor with my second child.) Melt 1/4 lb. of beeswax in a mason jar in a pot of boiling water on the stove. (The melting beeswax smell is intoxicating!) Heat 16 oz. of mineral oil in another container in the boiling water. Pour heated mineral oil into beeswax and mix together. Allow to cool to room temperature; it will harden as it cools.
Once the mixture sets, slather wooden utensils, cutting boards and serving pieces with spoon butter. (Just scoop it out with your fingers! Dry, cracked winter hands will soak up the spoon butter and smell delicious, too.) Let sit 24 hours and wipe clean the next day with a dry towel. Wooden pieces will shine and last longer, and the protective coating helps ward off unwanted bacteria.
I think spoon butter would make an amazing little gift for friends that love to work in the kitchen. The holiday season is over, but I’m keeping this gift idea in my brain pocket for next year. It’s something most people would not make for themselves, but anyone who has a favorite wooden spoon, spatula or salad bowl wants to preserve it as long as possible.
